I was isolated during this lesson due to COVID symptoms, which gave me a good opportunity to write some music by myself. I am still trying to figure out my method of writing songs, as I find it a lot more difficult to write than I find it to perform. I find that I often dislike what I have written after a period of time. I also find it difficult to write for my vocal range. I have a reasonably wide vocal range, but I often get shy and nervous to utilise my upper range, even when I am by myself. I find that these barriers often prevent me from writing songs I really like, leaving me with songs I find to be mediocre or even bad. I need to build my confidence in my writing ability and my singing ability. I also need to explore writing about different topics and themes, as I find my songs are often repetitive and stale. However, I feel like I don’t have a whole lot of experience outside of the themes I write about. I also find it a bit disingenuous to write about things I don’t really know about. However, I think it’s something that a lot of artists do. As such, I feel like it’s something I should aim to incorporate.
