Today we looked at the essentials of lyrics, which include the theme, rhyme scheme and message(1). Lyrics is something I have personally struggled with in the songwriting process, as I find it difficult to find interesting and original lyrics. I also find it difficult to adhere to a rhyme scheme without coming off as forced or contrived. Learning about internal rhymes and rhyme schemes is something that I think will help me later on when writing my own songs, as it puts less pressure on me to adhere to a strict “ABAB” rhyme scheme. Another technique I am interested in using is a pararhyme, which is where the consonants match, but the vowel is different. While I have seen these techniques used before, having them listed out will help me significantly.
